Marshmallow: All you need to know about Google’s latest sweet treat

Google’s latest sweet treat is here in time for Halloween and it’s bringing a whole new set of features to push your phone into the future. Android 6.0 Marshmallow debuted with Google’s newest handsets the Nexus 5X and the 6P; is the newest version of Android which is set to roll out onto most phones in the coming months.

Marshmallow brings a list of new features and changes to all Android devices. Some of them are revolutionary, something straight out of science fiction. Google Now on Tap is one of these and it’s going to blow your mind. Google Now is activated in the same way, long pressing the home button, and when launched, it will analyse the information on screen and offer further information on the subject or allow you to take action on the text that is written. This means that you can set up a reminder based on the text in a message or Google will give you information and suggestions, if you are on a page about the latest music.

App permissions is another new feature and, while this doesn’t sound as exciting as the Google Now upgrade, it is a very big step in customising your phone to your liking. You can now set which apps do what in terms of notifications and the services they have access to in detail. You could provide WhatsApp permission to use your camera but decline its requirement of location services.

The Doze feature is sure to be a favourite amongst those who face constant battery troubles. Doze monitors when the device has not been used for an extended period and puts it into a deep sleep, cutting off any background processes and saving battery life which would be expended in these services.

Marshmallow also brings hardware support to upcoming phones in the form of fingerprint scanner support and USB Type C support. It also brings Android Pay, Androids version of Apple Pay, a second attempt after the failed Google Wallet. Minor tweaks include a system UI tuner, which allows you to change the toggles in the quick-settings menu, better volume control options and easier methods to uninstall apps.

Marshmallow promises to be a revolutionary step forwards and, like previous versions of Android looks set to redefine and improve your Android experience. The update would be available on all major flagship phones and tablets as and when the developers push them out.

10 reasons why your phone battery charges slowly

No matter how advanced our smart phones become, they will always be dependent on their power source to function. Everyone employs their own methods of saving battery for that one extra hour of power, trying to push their phones to the max.

But what if the charging speed itself is slow? There isn’t any point in trying to save battery when an hour of charging will leave you with just 30%. Here are a few reasons as to why your phone may be charging slowly:

  1. The most common reason could be a faulty charger. When the charger is not able to deliver the required voltage, the battery takes much longer to charge. It’s always advisable to use chargers provided by the phone manufacturer
  2. Your cable might be broken or torn in places or the ports on either end could be blocked by dust and dirt
  3. The power source also makes a big difference. If the wall port where your phone is plugged in is not receiving the adequate voltage, it is going to affect the charge time. Plugging your phone into the laptop’s USB can result in slow charging time as well
  4. If you have an older phone then the processor itself will not be able to support any faster charging speeds. Make sure that the USB ports of your mobile are also clear of any lint or dust
  5. Constantly using your phone when it is on charge drains majority of the power, which it would have otherwise been able to store
  6. A phone used for a long time could have a worn-out battery. Batteries have a specific number of charge cycles and as they come closer to the end of their life, the amount of time they take to charge increases
  7. Background apps also tend to drain power. While it is not as significant as when the phone is in use, the battery drain would still lengthen the charge time
  8. The inside of the USB port often get corroded with time, leading to a slower charge intake.
  9. The USB port might be broken completely, in which case you would need to give the phone over to a professional for repairs
  10. Overcharging a phone can also lead to a degradation of its battery, damaging the cells which store power and extending the time it would take to fully charge the device.

By following these few tips, you’ll be able to get the fastest charging time for your phone as well as maintain battery health for a longer time. This will significantly reduce the amount of time your phone spend hugging a wall charger through the day.

Pushbullet : Get Notifications From Your Android Phone to Your Computer

Syncing your Android Device to your computer is not uncommon.
Pushbullet creates a connection between your Android device and your desktop computer with the help of a Chrome extension or a Windows app. With Pushbullet you can now view push notifications on your computer and also respond to text messages from your PC.

In short, Pushbullet allows you to beam links, files and texts between your Android phone and your Desktop.

Pushbullet

One of the most interesting features of Pushbullet is the Copy and Paste feature between your Android Phone and your computer. You have to first make sure you have the Windows and Android app installed. Then, highlight the content on your computer. Click Control-C or simply copy the highlighted portion. Then take your Android phone and paste it. The content you had copied from your PC will magically appear on the phone. You can also copy text from your Android device and paste it on your PC. It works either way. This creates a strong link between the two electronic devices making it feel like one.

Pushbullet is an interesting development and looks to be one of the best and most creative things currently in the Android territory.

Getting started with Google’s ARC Welder

Google recently released an ARC Welder Chrome app, which allows the user to run Android applications on Chrome OS or the Chrome web browser.

As of now, you can’t directly install applications from the Google Play Store on your Chrome browser. You need an Android application package or APK, or an Android application that has been stored in a ZIP file.

In order to run an APK file, you must first download the file from a repository on the Internet. Once downloaded, you can load it in ARC Welder and if it runs, test it out.

There’s no guarantee all (or any) of the apps you try will work or that they’ll be usable, but for developers who want to create Android apps that also run in Chrome OS and the Chrome browser, it’s useful for testing purposes.

For the rest of us, it’s just fun to play around and see how it works.

Let’s learn how to install the ARC Welder on your system

You will locate the ARC Welder on your Chrome web store. Install the app to get started.

ARC Welder

Once you have installed the ARC Welder, you must add it into your Chrome apps.

ARC Welder App

Once the ARC Welder app is added, you will have to find some APKs to run. There are a lot of places from where you can download APK files.

When you’ve found some, open Chrome and then start ARC Welder.

When you first run it, you’ll need to select a directory the APK can be written to. Click “Choose” and then either select an existing location or create a new one.

Next, you must load your first APK. Click “Add your APK” to begin.

Navigate to the folder where you saved your APK files and select one. Now you’ll be shown quite a few options, like how you want the orientation, any metadata you want to add, etc.

Now go ahead and click on Launch app. There is a high possibility that many of the APKs you tried to load won’t work.

If you load an Android app in Chrome, it will be available to load directly as a Chrome app from thereon. No need to load it through ARC Welder. You can, however, only test one Android app at a time. The next time you load an APK from ARC Welder, it will remove the previous app.

Nevertheless, it’s interesting to be able to load Android apps, not simply on Chrome OS, which seems a more natural fit, but on Windows, OS X, or any other system with the Chrome browser on it.
